cool article.  i'm going to make a concerted effort to look at this element in my reading and writing (in my own and others) now that i'm more actively aware.

Yet another thing to up my insecurities!

Cool endings? Tricky. A good ending is only good because of its relation to the story, so it would be hard to come up with a sure-fire method to write a good last sentence.

Some of those endings mentioned in the article don't even do a re-take on a term or concept mentioned earlier in the story, but touch on a broader, larger motif that may not have been as clear when everyone was still reading the the story. I think this is where good planning really pays off.

Unlike what the author says there, about the writer being absolutely free because they no longer need to keep the audience's commitment, I'd say the writer of a story is morally obliged to wrap things up with a satisfying ending. The written equivalent of a farewell with a handkerchief on the dockside, if you will.
